ConMat'05 (Third International Conference on Construction Materials: Performance, Innovations and Structural Implications) (August 22-24, 2005, at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre)
At the international conference ConMat'05, Dr. Takashi Fujiwara, a delegate from the Woodmiles Forum made a paper presentation. It was for the first time that the concept and practices of woodmiles were presented at an international forum. The paper began with an explanation regarding the current situation of the Japanese housing market and timber import, followed by the introduction of the concept of woodmiles indexes and practical application of the concept, for example, the Woodmiles CO2 certification scheme in Kyoto Prefecture . Questions regarding the return trips of oceangoing transportation and comparison with steel and other construction materials were asked.

Report of Mini seminar on Woodmiles
Mini-seminar on woodmiles (August 24, 2005, at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre)
Apart from the presentation at CONMAT05, Dr. Fujiwara and other delegates from the Forum conducted a mini-seminar on woodmiles in which Dr. Fujiwara explained the concept and significance of woodmiles in order to provide those interested with more detailed and practical information on woodmiles. Mr. Yasuhiro Takiguchi elaborated on the manner in which woodmiles are calculated, employing examples from Gifu Prefecture and shared his thoughts on woodmiles from the perspective of an architect. Several participants asked questions on specific gravities of forest products and on the promotion of the concept among architects.

Meeting with Dr. Bull and Dr. Cohen
August 25, 2005, at the UBC Forest Sciences Centre
Delegates from the Forum met with Dr. Bull and Dr. Cohen, both of who are UBC professors with an in-depth understanding of international forest product markets. Dr. Fujiwara explained to the professors the concept of woodmiles and their application in Japan, and thereafter, they exchanged information and opinions on similar LCA-based projects underway in North America, the LEED scheme, market acceptance of the woodmiles in the Japanese market, and the inclusion of the LEED standard in the 2010 Winter Olympic Bid Book presented by Vancouver.
